Fitness I

Credits:  2 Prerequisite: None

Fitness I is an introductory class on the principles of fitness and nutrition. This class focuses on the four major components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. A student who completes WELL 1161 should:

  • Obtain an understanding of the importance of sound physical fitness and wellness
  • Learn motivational and behavioral modification techniques to encourage compliance with a healthy lifestyle program
  • Learn to identify the health related components of physical fitness.
  • Learn the factors contributing to the development of cardio respiratory exercise prescription, muscular strength and endurance prescription and flexibility prescription
  • Learn the benefits and advantages of selected aerobic activities
  • Be able to define nutrition and describe its relationship to health and well-being
  • Learn and identify the functions of the basic nutrients
  • Learn the physiology of weight management

Additional Requirements

 

Work Out Requirements – Fall and Spring Semester – 30 workouts; Summer Semester 18 workouts – the assumption is that 3 workouts are to be completed each week. Workouts MUST be at least 50 minutes in length and include a minimum of 20 minutes of cardiovascular activity and 20 minutes of strength training with a 4-minute warm-up and a 5-minute cool-down. Students living in the Albany area MUST use one of the Albany State University Fitness Centers (East Campus or the West Campus). Students who live outside the Albany area must find a facility for their workouts and submit a Facility Selection Form (available in your online class) for approval and must include an acceptable Fitness Monitor.

Proctored Tests – This course may require 1 proctored test online with Proctor U. Testing through Proctor U requires a computer (not a mobile device) with a webcam and microphone.

Fitness II

Credits:  2 Prerequisite:  WELL  1161

Fitness II reviews the principles of fitness and nutrition and covers information on healthy lifestyle choices. The class reviews the four major components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. A student who completes WELL 1162 Fitness II should:

  • Obtain an understanding of the importance of sound physical fitness and wellness
  • Learn motivational and behavioral modification techniques to encourage compliance with a healthy lifestyle program
  • Be able to define and assess the components of physical fitness.
  • Learn the factors contributing to the development of cardio respiratory exercise prescription, muscular strength and endurance prescription and flexibility prescription
  • Learn the benefits and advantages of selected aerobic activities
  • Be able to define nutrition and describe its relationship to health and well-being
  • Learn and identify the functions of the basic nutrients.
  • Learn the physiology of weight management.
  • Be able to define stress, eustress, and distress
  • Understand and be able to explain how stress affects health and optimal performance.
  • Develop time management skills
  • Be able to identify major sources of stress in their lives
  • Be able to define the role of physical exercise in reducing stress
  • Learn to use various stress management techniques
  • Understand the importance of implementing a healthy lifestyle program
  • Be able to dispel common misconceptions related to physical fitness and wellness

Intro to Physical Education, Fitness and Sport

Credits:  1 Prerequisite: None
Corequisite: ENGL 0989

WELL 2201 is an introduction and orientation to the history, philosophy, aims, and career opportunities in physical education, fitness and sports. This class is restricted to PE majors only. A student who completes WELL 2201 should:

  • Describe the range of physical activity opportunities for different age groups.
  • Discuss the influence of Greece and Rome.
  • Describe the emergence of national sports forms
  • Analyze the cultural context within the profession.
  • Analyze the emergence of professional sport.
  • Define the concept of play and explain how it relates to sport.
  • Discuss sport ethics.
  • Analyze youth sport, interscholastic sport, and collegiate sport.
  • Discuss issues related to coaching in youth, interscholastic, and intercollegiate sport.
  • Discuss the roles played by a physical educator.
  • Describe the NASPE national standards for beginning teachers.

Sport Injury Prevention and Care

Credits:2 Prerequisite: None
Corequisite: ENGL 0989

WELL 2210 is a study of the identification, prevention, treatment and care for common sports injuries. The topics include the domains of athletic training including and the various anatomical structures injured in athletics. The objective of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the field of athletic training. (Meets only Area B requirements, will not count as an Area G requirement) A student who completes WELL 2201 should:

  • Explain the field of athletic training
  • Discuss on an exam the basic anatomy of a specific body part
  • Construct a diet for an athlete using proper foods and fluids
  • Utilize a splint correctly on a specific body part
  • Discuss specific injuries related to anatomical structures.
